An international symposium on Common Use Licensing for Scientific Literature and Data will be held on March 25, 2009, in Beijing, China. The idea of the symposium was initiated by Creative Commons China Mainland.

This Symposium will be co-hosted by the National Science Library of Chinese Academy of Science, the U.S. National Committee for CODATA of the National Academy of Sciences, and Creative Commons China Mainland.

This one-day symposium will review the rationale, practice, and issues associated with the application of Creative Commons/Science Commons “common use” licenses to scientific literature and data in government and academia. The event will also explore the possible implementation of these licenses for publicly funded scientific literature and data in China. The symposium is designed to provide a basic introduction of the subject to members of the scientific literature and data community. It is believed that this information will appeal to the interests of both the science policy and the science research communities.

There will be a wide array of speakers participating in the symposium, both from the PRC and from abroad, representing various institutes. Included among them will be the National Science & Technology Infrastructure Center of China, The National Science Library of Chinese Academy of Sciences, The National Natural Science Foundation of China, The Scientific Database Center of CAS, The National Research Council of the U.S, Renmin University of China Law School, Mozilla Online China, Science Commons, Queensland University of Technology Law School, Columbia University, and University of Maine.

This event will bring together a large group of participants from various universities, research institutes, governmental agencies, libraries, and the Internet industry.
